One of the three people attacked by a shark during a beach outing in Walton County, Florida, has had part of her leg amputated. The victim, a teenage girl, was transported to Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital where she underwent the surgery.
According to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File, there were 57 unprovoked shark attacks in Florida in 2022. This is the highest number of attacks recorded in the state in a single year.
The other two victims of the Walton County attack, a man and a woman, were also injured but their wounds were not as severe. They were treated at a local hospital and released.
The shark attack occurred on Thursday afternoon at Henderson Beach State Park. The victims were swimming in the Gulf of Mexico when they were attacked. The shark species involved in the attack has not yet been identified.
