Out-of-town social media seekers destroying local beauty spots

Volunteers clean up after visitors leave piles of rubbish at beauty spots

A group of volunteers have hit out at out-of-town social media seekers after cleaning up piles of rubbish in a 19th Century mine.

The team from the M6 Protection Group have become increasingly concerned about the growing trend of people seeking out beauty spots to capture images to post on social media.

They say the trend is putting a strain on the environment, with visitors littering and causing damage to the natural landscape.

Last month the volunteers carried out a clean-up of a disused mine on Brunshaw Road, Burnley, where they hauled out a pile of rubbish that was 6ft tall and 3 ft wide.

Tones of rubbish

The clean-up team, which is made up of off-road riders who use the mine as part of their track, say they have been shocked by the amount of rubbish they have found left by visitors.

In recent months they have collected thousands of empty drinks cans, plastic bottles, fast food containers and general rubbish from the beauty spot.

The volunteers say the rubbish is not only unsightly but it is also a hazard to wildlife and can pollute the water table.

Anyone with information about the littering is urged to contact the police or Burnley Borough Council.

The volunteers are now appealing to visitors to take their rubbish home with them and to respect the environment.

They also say that if visitors see anyone littering they should report it to the authorities.
