Witold Pilecki: The Bravest Man in the World

An Almost Unbelievable Story
Witold Pilecki was born in 1901 in OÅ‚oniec Karelia. In 1940, with the outbreak of World War II, he joined the Polish resistance movement. In 1943, he volunteered for a mission that would make him one of the most remarkable figures in history. He allowed himself to be captured by the Germans and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp.
Pilecki's mission was to gather intelligence about the camp and to organize resistance among the prisoners. He spent nearly three years in Auschwitz, during which time he witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust firsthand. He was tortured and starved, but he never gave up hope.
