Senator Robert Menendez Found Guilty on All Counts in Federal Corruption Trial
Bob Menendez Convicted of Bribery, Conspiracy, Extortion, and Obstruction of Justice
New Jersey Democrat Found Guilty of 16 Counts
Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) has been found guilty on all 16 counts in his federal corruption trial. The jury convicted Menendez of bribery conspiracy, extortion, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent.
The charges stem from a three-year investigation by the US Department of Justice. Prosecutors accused Menendez of accepting bribes from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for political favors. The bribes included cash, gold bars, and a luxury watch.
Menendez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, were both indicted on the charges in April 2015. Menendez's trial began in September 2017 and lasted for nearly three months. The jury deliberated for eight days before reaching a verdict.
Menendez is the first sitting US Senator to be convicted of a felony since 1980. He faces up to 80 years in prison.
